Questions from the Classics

So I flip on the tele, and instead of the news, South Pacific comes on. I cannot resist a classic musical, so here I still sit, awaiting this final reunion scene.

My question is how Emile De Becque could go on his dangerous special mission. I know Nelly has just dumped him because he fathered children with a Polynesian woman, and he is asked to go now that he has "less to lose."

So in this macho World War II era refusing a mission because you're boinking a hot young blonde is understandable and "too much to lose." But asking a guy to orphan his kids was acceptable. Not even an appeal to their welfare, the potential nightmare of Japanese rule in their future, is made. Just a macho call to go hunting and forget about those troublesome females.
